I have no way of recalling it, but leaving the comfort of the womb and inhaling of the air of the earth for the first time must not have been a pleasing experience. I am not aware of any babies that arrive to this world laughing and having fun, instead they all get here crying their lungs out. Indeed lungs are highly sensitive.

Anyone from Hawaii taken a trip to mainland in the middle of the winter? You know you are not on the beach at Kailua anymore Toto. Your lungs let you know right away, that the climate has changed dramatically. Getting back to work is pretty hard after those fun mainland trips, especially if you are sick on top of it. That is why I highly recommend my patients to come in for a Acupuncture tune-up before they hop on a plane to fly out or upon landing and setting a foot on Oahu.

In Oriental Medicine our lungs are considered from the perspective of belonging
to the element of Metal. Imagine a piece of metal if you would. If you put it in the refrigerator it will observe the cold from its’ environment, in return becoming cold. If you put the piece of metal on the stove and heat it up, it will observe the heat. It can easily pass that heat or cold to anything that is touching it. Too much heat melts it, too much cold breaks it. Now if you take that piece of metal and keep it inside a jug of water for too long, the metal will get rusted, weakened and eventually get destroyed. Just as in this example, your lungs are very prone to the environmental changes of hot (dry) and cold (wet or also called “damp”).

At my Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine clinic here in Honolulu (www.OsAcupuncture.com) , I see a lot cases related to respiratory issues that give the signs of heat, cold, damp and dry. For example a person with COLD symptoms may present with signs of plenty clear or white sputum, where as person with HEAT may present with signs of relatively less, thicker sputum that is yellowish in color. It all depends on the constitution of the body and how the disorder progresses.

Treatment for each type of disorder is different, therefore requires a different treatment approach. Also each condition may present combination of disorders such as Damp & Heat, Damp & Cold etc. That is why all my clients get a through evaluation, and get a custom treatment that would be necessary for their particular condition.
